2007, Atwood et al. 2011). 2013-09-13 Interference competition among burying beetles (Silphidae, Nicrophorus) STEPHEN T. TRUMBO Department of Biology, University of North Carolina Abstract 1. This study investigated the impact of intraspecific and interspecific competition on the reproductivt: success of a biparental burying beetle, Nicrophorus defodiem Mannwheim. 2. interference competition (IC) and exploitative competition (EC) for shared food resources. We assessed the relative extent by which small- and large-bodied cladocerans suppressed the rotifer Keratella cochlearis by these mechanisms, using circulating algal suspensions in dual-chamber laboratory cultures and natural animal densities.

We found that there was no such straightforward relationship between the amount of agonistic behavior of an individual and its intake rate and attributed this to the strong establishment of the relative dominance status of the birds. Interference, essentially as described by the Osgood Transfer Surface.

Interference competition occurs directly between individuals via aggression etc. when the individuals interfere with foraging, survival, reproduction of others, or by directly preventing their physical establishment in a portion of the habitat. Interference competition is a direct form of competition where an organism actively interferes with another organism's ability to obtain it's resource. Although there may be plenty of the resource, Interference competition encompasses processes by which the behaviors of one species prevent the access to resources by other species (Maurer 1984) and can be divided into two main types (Schoener 1983): territorial competition (when a species hinders the access to resources of other species by agonistic behavior) and preemptive competition (when a species, simply by its presence, gains full access to resources by controlling space). Mutual interference competition is common across all taxa (DeLong and Vasseur 2011), but here we show that interference is a shifting parameter rather than a characteristic of a population. Intraspecific competition can also alter interspecific interactions by encouraging greater niche breadth, leading to niche overlap with more species (Vellend 2006 ).
